Use of heat shield mats in motor vehicles

The function of heat shield mats is based primarily on reflecting heat radiation. A heat shield mat can provide a quick remedy wherever sources of heat can lead to temperature problems.

Heat shield mats are mainly installed in the engine compartment and in proximity to the exhaust system. The applications are extremely diverse. Under normal conditions, temperatures of 120°C and higher can lead to problems or the failure or breakdown of electrical connectors and components as well as the most commonly used plastics and certain liquids.

The task is to determine and test the best possible fastening system for each intended purpose. The mats are usually fastened in position with the aid of stainless-steel button fasteners or Kevlar seams. When the substrate and geometrical shape permit, cost-efficient solutions are also possible in the form of self-adhesive heat shields. As a rule, our shields are based on an aluminised glass fibre fabric. Depending on the application, it is possible to make use of different variants, thicknesses and levels of

resistance. The reflective aluminium surface ensures the material is able to withstand thermal radiation without any loss of stability.

The heat reflectivity of even a very thin layer of aluminium is as much as 80%. With skilful installation, it is possible to achieve application temperatures ranging from -40°C to > 330°C, although it is worth remembering that the glass fibre fabric itself is resistant to temperatures up to 600°C.

Quite often, the heat shield is also required to offer radiation protection and act as a heat insulator. The heating up of the underbonnet environment after the engine has been switched off is a typical example. For special cases such as these, we recommend a sandwich construction, which offers the described reflectivity on the outside and is covered with an insulating fleece on the inside.
